Reducing EVSE Install Costs with Early Planning

As EVs become more and more popular, the number of public garages that want to install EV vehicle chargers grows every day.

According to the Bloomberg Report’s “Electric Vehicle Outlook”, industry insiders expect 57% of vehicles on the road to be EVs by 2050. The popularity of EVs rises every year. Nearly 2 million new EVs will be on the road this year, when just a few years ago, only a couple of thousand new EVs were on the road each year. EVs are the future of automobiles, and many drivers are already eager for more charging stations.

Many businesses, which have purchased and installed EV chargers in the past, have found they need more of them now that more of their clients, residents, patients, and employees are driving EVs. A little planning can save businesses thousands on future installations by preparing for them while installing their first set of chargers.

If your business is interested in installing EVSE, or you already have and need more chargers, below are some suggestions on how to save a bundle on future installs.

New Development Projects

If your project is a new residential or commercial building that will have a parking garage or lot, you can save money and time by installing chargers during the construction process instead of waiting and installing as a retrofit after the project is completed. If you know you will be installing EVSE at some point, installing them immediately is a great deal easier and less expensive for the owner.

Many builders aren’t aware there can be different strengths, or levels, to chargers that can be dependent on the amount of power available. If the owner chooses to install chargers a year or two down the line, and then install more chargers at a later time, they may find they do not have the necessary power for the chargers they want. If you build the garage first and install chargers later, the amount of power usable for chargers will be whatever is leftover.

This will result in chargers being installed at a weaker strength, resulting in longer charging times. If the installation of chargers is considered during the engineering and planning phase of a construction process, adequate power can be provided for chargers to be installed at high strengths for faster charging times. If the owner wants powerful chargers and did not incorporate electrical needs of the chargers in the owner’s planning and engineering phase, the owner may be stuck paying absurd amounts to add the electrical capacity needed for strong chargers.

Including increased electrical capacity in your construction plans will enable owners to offer the fastest chargers possible. Installing chargers now, during the building process, and preparing for future installations down the line, results in plenty of power for stronger, faster chargers.

Using the Basics of Installation to Save on Future Projects

The first step to installation is getting the electricity from the power source to the charger. The closer to the power source the charger is, the less expensive the installation. Owners will also need to decide if chargers are wall-mounted or pedestal mounted.

Planning for future expansion of EVSE can save a bundle later by making sure you have the capacity for more chargers while installing the first set. Make sure you have the electrical capacity, a large enough panel, and large enough conduit runs for future installation.
