EV Charging Etiquette: Best Practices for Users in India

Posted 08/28/2023

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more prevalent, it's important for EV drivers to follow proper charging etiquette to ensure a seamless and efficient charging experience for all. Charging stations are valuable resources, and practising good manners can help promote a positive EV community. In this blog, we'll delve into the dos and don'ts of EV charging etiquette to help both new and experienced EV drivers navigate the charging process with consideration and respect.

Dos of EV Charging

Plan Ahead

Before setting out on a journey, plan your charging stops in advance. Check charging station locations, availability, and compatibility with your vehicle. This proactive approach can help you avoid unexpected charging delays and ensure you have a smooth trip.

Use Charging Apps

Make use of charging apps and websites that provide real-time information about charging station locations, availability, and charging speeds. These tools can help you find the nearest station and plan your route accordingly.

Do Educate Yourself

Use the correct device to charge your vehicle. For electric cars, use the 4-wheeler charging station which has Type 2 charging ports.

Be Timely

When using a public charging station, be mindful of the time. Avoid leaving your vehicle plugged in for an extended period after it's fully charged. This will give other drivers a chance to use the charger efficiently.

Respect Parking Spaces

Park your EV only in designated charging spots. Avoid occupying charging spots if you're not actively charging, as this can hinder other drivers who genuinely need to recharge their vehicles.

Unplug When Done

Once your EV is fully charged, promptly unplug it from the charger. This practice ensures that the charger is available for others who need it.

Engage in Friendly Communication

If you arrive at a charging station and see other drivers waiting, engage in friendly communication. If you've finished charging, offer to unplug your vehicle to let someone else use the charger.

Educate Others

If you encounter non-EV drivers parking in EV charging spots (known as "ICEing"), politely inform them about the importance of these spots for EV charging. Advocacy and education can help create a more EV-friendly environment.

Practice Safety

Unplug & disconnect the charger if it heats up excessively. Regularly check the charging cable for cuts/damages.

Do notify issues

If you face some issues with charging, notify the office management and Charging Service Provider. Contact Blink @ 080 6897 1240.

Don'ts of EV Charging Etiquette

Don't Block Charging Stations

Avoid blocking access to charging stations, even for a short time. Blocking charging spots can cause unnecessary frustration for other EV drivers and delay their charging sessions.

Don't Leave Unattended

While charging, stay nearby or check on your vehicle regularly. Leaving your vehicle unattended for an extended period can prevent others from using the charger if they need it urgently.

Don’t ICE Charging Stations

Avoid parking non-electric vehicles (ICE vehicles) in EV charging spots, preventing EV owners from accessing the charging infrastructure. Wrong parking could carry penalties.

Don’t Run Over Cables

Do not run over the charging cable when you move the vehicle out of the parking zone. Any damages caused could incur penalties.

Don’t Disconnect Others’ Vehicles

Never disconnect someone else's EV from a charging station unless there is an emergency, or you have explicit permission.

Don't Leave Trash Behind

Keep charging stations clean and tidy. Dispose of any trash properly and leave the area as you found it. A clean environment promotes a positive EV community.

Conclusion

Practising proper EV charging etiquette is essential for fostering a respectful and efficient charging experience for all EV drivers. By following the dos and don'ts outlined in this blog, you can contribute to a positive EV community and help pave the way for the continued growth of sustainable transportation. Remember that small gestures of consideration can have a significant impact on the overall EV charging experience.
