Understanding the Workplace Charging Scheme: A Step Towards Sustainable Energy

Posted 04/24/2025

In the UK’s push towards a net-zero future, electric vehicles (EVs) are taking centre stage. But with more drivers making the switch, the need for reliable, accessible EV charging infrastructure has never been greater. The government introduced the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) to support this transition, a powerful incentive to help businesses install EV chargers at their premises.

If your business is thinking about going green, now is the time. The WCS offers generous financial support and positions your organisation as a forward-thinking, environmentally conscious workplace. Here is what you need to know about the Workplace Charging Scheme and Blink’s solutions for your business.

What is the Workplace Charging Scheme?

The Workplace Charging Scheme is a government grant designed to reduce the cost of purchasing and installing electric vehicle chargers for use by staff and fleets.

Offered through the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), the scheme provides £350 per socket for up to 40 sockets per applicant. This equates to £14,000 in potential savings per business.

How Does the Scheme Work?

The scheme operates as a voucher-based system, and here’s how it works:

  1. Eligibility
With off-street parking, the WCS is available to any UK-registered business, charity, or public sector organisation. You must demonstrate a need for EV chargers for staff or fleet use.

  2. Application
Businesses apply online via the OZEV portal. Once approved, they receive a voucher code that is valid for 180 days.

  3. Installation
Work with an OZEV-approved installer to carry out the installation. They will redeem the voucher on your behalf by reducing the invoice total accordingly.

  4. Funding
The grant covers up to 75% of the total costs, capped at £350 per charging socket. You can claim up to 40 sockets across all your sites.

Deadline Extended – But Don’t Delay

The great news is that the Workplace Charging Scheme has been extended until 31 March 2026. However, it’s important to note that the funding pot remains fixed.

This means funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and once the budget is depleted, the scheme could close early. Businesses that wait too long may find that the funding has already run out.

💡 Act now to secure your share before the fund is fully allocated!

Why Should Your Business Apply?

  1. Substantial Cost Savings
Installing EV infrastructure can be expensive. The WCS helps reduce this financial burden significantly.

  2. Improve Sustainability Credentials
Supporting electric vehicle use aligns with your corporate social responsibility goals and enhances your environmental profile.

  3. Future-Proof Your Workplace
With the 2035 petrol and diesel vehicle ban looming, EVs are the future. A charging infrastructure now puts your business ahead of the curve.

  4. Attract and Retain Employees
Offering EV charging can be a valuable employee perk that shows your company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

  5. Stack with Other Benefits
The WCS can be used alongside tax incentives like the First Year Allowance, further reducing the cost of EV charge point investment.
