Administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), the Workplace Charging Scheme for Education is the primary grant scheme for state funded schools and colleges, offering up to four times the standard business rate. Significant funding available

At £2,000 per socket, the education grant rate is four times higher than the standard business rate. The standard Workplace Charging Scheme covers 75% off the cost of purchase and installation up to £350 per socket, the education rate represents far greater support. With up to 40 sockets fundable per institution, the maximum grant under this scheme is £80,000, making it one of the most substantial EV infrastructure grant scheme opportunities available to public sector organisations in the UK.

Who Qualifies for the Education WCS?

Eligible institution types

  • State funded primary and secondary schools

  • Academies and free schools

  • Further education colleges

  • Universities (for staff and visitor charging)

  • Sixth form colleges

  • Special educational needs (SEN) schools

Key eligibility conditions

  • The institution must be state-funded (independent schools use the standard WCS rate of £500/socket, which covers 75 off the cost of purchase).

  • Charge points must be for staff and fleets or visitor use, not for general public charging.

  • Installation must be carried out by an OZEV-approved installer when installing EV chargers at your site.

  • A valid WCS voucher must be obtained before installation begins. The voucher is valid for 180 days from approval.

  • The governing body or trust must confirm they have authority to apply for the grant and authorise works on the premises.

Site Assessment: What Your Site Can Support

How to Apply

  1. Contact an OZEV-approved installer such as Blink Charging for a free site assessment and charge point recommendation. Confirm your institution has authority to apply for the grant from your governing body or trust.

  2. Your installer submits the WCS Education voucher application to OZEV on your behalf. Vouchers are valid for 180 days from the date of approval.

  3. OZEV approves the voucher (typically 2–4 weeks).

  4. You buy and install the charge points; the grant is deducted from your invoice, reducing total installation costs directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can independent schools access the higher education grant rate?

No. The £2,000/socket rate applies to state funded schools only. Independent schools can apply for the standard WCS at £500 per socket, which covers 75% off the cost of purchase and installation.

Applications submitted before 1 April 2026 may claim the previous rate of £2,500 per socket, provided the installation is redeemed before 30 September 2026. Contact your installer to confirm your voucher status.

WCS vouchers are valid for 180 days from the date of OZEV approval. If installation cannot be completed within this window, contact your installer promptly, extensions may be available in limited circumstances.

Yes, but the 40-socket maximum applies per legal entity. Multi-academy trusts (MATs) may be able to apply per academy, subject to OZEV guidance. A site survey will help determine how many charge points each site can support. Speak to Blink for advice specific to your trust structure.

Charge points are typically installed in designated off street parking areas on the school premises. If your premises has no dedicated off-street parking, street parking facilities or shared car parks nearby may be considered. Blink's site survey will assess your options. On your premises the parking arrangement is reviewed as part of the planning process.

The Workplace Charging Scheme applies to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Schools and colleges in the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey) are not covered and should contact their local authority for available support.
