If you live in a flat, rent your home, or do not have dedicated off street parking, there are government grants available to help reduce the cost of installing EV charging infrastructure at or near your home. Administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), these grant schemes are designed to ensure that EV charging point access is available to everyone, not just homeowners with a driveway. This guide explains every home EV charger grant available in England, Wales and Scotland in 2026 and helps you find the one that applies to your situation.

Note: The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) for standard homeowners ended in April 2022. Homeowners who own their property outright and have private off street parking spaces or dedicated off street parking are no longer eligible for the grant towards home charger installation. The grants below apply to renters, flat owners, and households without a driveway.

Home EV Charger Grants Available in 2026

EV Chargepoint Grant for Renters and Flat Owners

What it isA government grant of up to £500 per charging point socket towards the cost of installing a home EV chargepoint, for renters and flat-dwellers living in residential properties.
Who it is forPrivate renters, housing association tenants, and owner-occupiers in flats or shared accommodation.
Funding availableUp to £500 per socket from 1 April 2026 (previously £350 per socket).
Maximum socketsUp to 2 sockets per household.

On-Street Residential Charging Scheme (ORCS)

What it isA government programme funding local authorities to buy and install EV charging points on residential streets, for households without private off-street parking.
Who it is forUK residents who rely on street parking spaces and cannot install a private home charger due to lack of a driveway or garage.
Funding availableUp to £500 per socket from 1 April 2026. Councils can receive funding that covers up to 75% of eligible charging infrastructure costs.
How to accessResidents cannot apply directly. Your local council applies for ORCS funding and installs charge points on your street. Contact your local authority to find out if an on-street parking space with charging is available in your area.
Scheme statusOpen. Councils apply on a rolling basis.

Residential Landlord Chargepoint Grant

What it isA government grant reducing the cost of installing EV charging points at residential properties, enabling tenants to benefit from home EV charging.
Who it is forPrivate and social residential landlords with at least one rental property in England, Wales and Scotland.
Funding availableUp to £500 per socket. Up to 200 grant applications per year per landlord across their residential properties.
How tenants benefitIf your landlord installs a charging point using this grant, you may be able to use it as a tenant. Some renters may also be eligible for the grant in their own right, it is worth checking with your landlord.
Scheme statusOpen. Extended until 31 March 2027.

Which Grant Is Right for My Home?

I rent my home from a private landlord

You may be eligible for the EV Chargepoint Grant for Renters and Flat Owners. This grant covers up to £500 per socket towards the cost of installing a home EV charging point, provided you have your landlord's permission. Your landlord may also want to apply for the Residential Landlord Chargepoint Grant directly, it is worth discussing which route suits both parties. Either way, only one grant can be claimed per socket installation.

I own a flat or live in shared accommodation

If you live in a flat, whether you own it outright or are an owner-occupier in a shared building,  flat owners are eligible for the EV Chargepoint Grant for Renters and Flat Owners. You will need the permission of your freeholder or management company, and the charging point must be installed in a shared parking area or in a space associated with your property. The charge point must be bought and installed by an OZEV-approved installer to be eligible for the grant.

I have no driveway and rely on street parking

If you have no private off street parking spaces and rely on a street parking space, you cannot install a home charging point yourself. However, you can benefit from the On-Street Residential Charging Scheme (ORCS). Under ORCS, your local council can apply for funding that covers up to 75% of the cost of installing EV charge points in residential parking spaces near your home. Residents do not apply directly, contact your local authority to find out whether ORCS-funded street parking spaces are planned in your area, or to request coverage.

I own my home and have a driveway

If you own your home outright and have dedicated off street parking, there is currently no direct government grant for home EV charger installation. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) closed in April 2022. You can still buy and install a home EV charging point at your own cost, many homeowners find that smart charge points pay for themselves through cheaper overnight tariffs. If you also drive for work, your employer may be able to claim through the Workplace Charging Scheme to fund a workplace charging point for you. Key Eligibility Requirements for Home EV Charger Grants

The following conditions apply across all OZEV home EV charging grant schemes. You must meet these requirements to be eligible for the grant:

  • You must own or be purchasing one of the following electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids (PHEV): a fully battery electric vehicle (BEV) or a plug-in hybrid. You must have a confirmed intention to purchase one if you do not already own it.

  • The charging point must be bought and installed by an OZEV-approved installer, you cannot claim for self-installation.

  • The charging point must appear on the OZEV-approved product list and must be a smart charge point capable of communicating with smart systems.

  • You must be a UK resident (England, Wales and Scotland). Channel Islands and Isle of Man residents are not eligible for the grant under OZEV schemes.

  • For renters: you must have written permission from your landlord before installation begins.

  • For flat owners in shared buildings: you must have freeholder or management company permission.

  • Only one grant can be claimed per socket. A household can claim for up to the maximum number of sockets specified per scheme.

  • The property must be in England, Wales or Scotland. Northern Ireland operates a separate framework.
