EV Charger Grants for Public Sector Organisations (2026)

Local authorities, NHS trusts, central government departments, and other public sector organisations can access government funding and infrastructure programmes to deploy EV charging infrastructure across their estate. Workplace Charging Scheme WCS - Public Sector

What it isAn OZEV EV chargepoint grant for public sector organisations to buy and install EV charge points for staff driving an electric vehicle and fleet vehicles.
Who it is forNHS trusts, local councils, central government departments, police, fire and rescue services, and other public bodies. Also available to businesses charities and third-sector organisations.
Funding availableUp to £500 per socket from 1 April 2026. The grant covers up to 40 sockets per applicant (£20,000 maximum) per financial year.
Scheme statusOpen. Extended until 31 March 2027.

Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund

What it isA major government capital fund enabling local authorities to procure and install public EV charging infrastructure across their area.
Who it is forLocal authorities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (including combined authorities and transport authorities).
Funding availableMulti-year capital funding. Allocation based on local need and strategic plan, distributed per financial year.
Scheme statusOpen. Applications and allocations ongoing through Innovate UK and OZEV.

On-Street Residential Charging Scheme (ORCS)

What it isA government grant scheme enabling local authorities to install on-street EV charge points for residents without private off street parking or dedicated off street parking at their home.
Who it is forLocal authorities across the UK.
Funding availableThe grant covers up to 75% of the cost of capital works. Funding allocated by application round. Street parking spaces are converted into EV charging bays for residents.

Which Scheme Is Right for My Organisation?

I need charging for public sector staff and fleet

The Workplace Charging Scheme WCS applies to all public sector employers. From 1 April 2026 it funds up to £500 per socket, with a maximum of 40 sockets (£20,000) per applicant. State-funded education institutions receive an enhanced rate of £2,000 per socket. The WCS is also available to businesses charities and third-sector bodies. To buy and install charge points under the WCS, your organisation must use an OZEV-approved installer.

I am a local authority wanting public charging infrastructure

The LEVI Fund is the main capital programme for local authorities wanting to procure and install public EV charging infrastructure. Available across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, funding is allocated per financial year based on local need and a strategic plan submitted to Innovate UK. I want to install on-street charge points for residents

The On-Street Residential Charging Scheme (ORCS) funds local authorities to install charge points on residential streets, helping residents without private off street parking or dedicated off street parking access home-speed EV charging. Street parking spaces are converted to EV charging bays. ORCS covers up to 75% of the cost of capital works, across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Are these grants available in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. The Workplace Charging Scheme WCS is available to public sector organisations in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The LEVI Fund and ORCS schemes also apply across England, Wales Scotland and Northern, specific allocation rounds may vary by devolved nation. Scotland and Northern Ireland may have additional devolved funding programmes; contact your local transport authority for guidance.

OZEV grant schemes do not apply to the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey). Public sector organisations in the Channel Islands should contact the States of Jersey or States of Guernsey for locally administered EV charging infrastructure funding.

Yes. The EV chargepoint grant via the Workplace Charging Scheme WCS is available to businesses charities and public sector employers alike. Any organisation with a business premises and OZEV-approved installer can apply.

Under the Workplace Charging Scheme WCS, the maximum is 40 sockets per applicant per financial year. At 500 per socket, this equates to £20,000 per year. LEVI and ORCS funding is allocated separately by capital round and is not subject to the same per-socket cap.
