Public Charging.
eMobility is a regulated service governed by specific rules, protocols and government requirements. It is important to know that any charger located in a private or public place and having public access is required to be connected to an eMobility platform and managed by a certified and fully designated EV-CPO (Electric Vehicle Charging Point Operators). The Electric Motor Company is a company similar to the electricity provider for the purpose of managing public access points, whether they are in a private or public space.
So, when we refer to public charging, we have in mind an EV company, connectivity and full control of the charger remotely.
Connectivity & Load Control
Chargers are potentially a very high electrical load, requiring the network administrator to have full control over these charges procured by their corresponding managing companies, so that they can operate properly within the country’s power capacity system without overloading the grid due to mass charging of electric cars. For these reasons, a key requirement for chargers to be included in publicly accessible areas is to meet very strict connectivity standards.
Safe Charging & Protection
Chargers must be certified to the CE standard with the relevant subtypes for electric power supplies but at the same time must be designed with specific features that ensure the safe use of the devices by the users.
One of these specifications is the anti-vandalism construction where an external malicious user is not allowed to easily destroy the charger. The anti-vandalism of an outlet that prevents electric shock to people who intentionally or negligently try to insert a metal object into the connectors, as well as the requirement for certified and sealed MID type meters inside the charger which will be able to independently measure the supply to each outlet of the charger so that the pricing is correct and certified.
Residential Charging
It is worth noting in this category that the requirements are much more simple. Residential chargers are installed in private residential spaces, which as a whole is measured in terms of power consumption and is priced by a provider with a certified HEDNO (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator) meter. Therefore, the charger itself does not require a certified high-precision meter. Moreover, connectivity is not necessary.
What is more, the loads of residential chargers represent a very small amount of energy that is absorbed by the grid so that they do not pose a substantial risk to the power grid and therefore do not need to be remotely controlled by the network administrator.
