Green cities in the post-Covid era

Posted 12/14/2021

How did COVID push European cities to greener mobility?

Cities across Europe are looking towards greener visions of mobility in the coming years. The electric car has already started to be the main protagonist in the green cities along with the electric bicycle.

Research has shown that if cities do not become greener, more people will leave them for rural areas in search for better air quality.

Today, the pandemic has functioned as a magnifying glass that made us see that health must be one of the central aspects in the management and planning of the city.

A global Moovit survey asked people how COVID-19 has affected public transport use. It revealed that up to a third of people in some cities have stopped using public transport due to the pandemic.

In capitals such as Berlin, the use of public transport has been greatly reduced. In Thessaloniki, 34.3% of people no longer use public transport due to concerns about COVID and almost 70% of respondents said they would prefer more buses on the road for quality, safety and comfort.

The car is actually the winner in the pandemic situation, along with the bicycle, while the public transport system and the aviation come in 2nd place.

People choose to move more by using the car and the electric skate / bike. This was a huge change brought about by the pandemic, which is still going on.

Green future is our eternal present!
