What Is a DC Fast Charger?
DC fast chargers (DCFCs) are the fastest type of EV charger, capable of fully charging an EV battery in as little as an hour. Also known as Level 3 chargers, these charging stations are vital for EV drivers traveling long distances or managing busy schedules.
Unlike Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, which supply alternating current (AC) power that the EV must convert to direct current (DC) for storage, DC chargers convert AC power from the grid to direct current (DC) before delivering it to the car’s battery. This allows for much higher power transfer rates and lightning-fast charging times.
Whereas Level 1 and 2 chargers can take many hours to fully charge an EV, Level 3 chargers can replenish up to 80% of the car’s battery in as little as 20-30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
DC Fast Charging Questions, Answered
No. Residential properties are typically limited to single-phase power, meaning they cannot accommodate DC fast chargers. DCFCs are only available to commercial properties or public charging stations with access to three-phase power, which is required to support the high energy demands of these chargers.
Yes, DC fast chargers are a great investment for business owners. Provided your property has access to three-phase power, you should be able to have DCFCs installed without issue. If you’re on single-phase power, you can opt for Level 2 chargers. While not as fast, they can still be a great source of revenue, and the extra time it takes to charge can help increase customer dwell time.

DC fast chargers require a 3-phase AC input of 400-600 VAC. If you have questions about compatibility, one of our team members will be happy to assist you.
With a DCFC, charging to 80% can take as little as 20 minutes. A full charge typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the vehicle and battery capacity.
In the United States, DC fast charging primarily uses three connector types: CCS (Combined Charging System), which is widely supported by American and European automakers like Ford, GM, and Volkswagen; Tesla’s proprietary connector, used for its Supercharger network; and CHAdeMO, found on some Japanese vehicles like the Nissan Leaf. Most public fast-charging stations in the U.S. offer CCS and CHAdeMO connectors, while Tesla owners can use adapters to access other networks.
No. While most newer EVs can handle a DC fast charge, some older models or those with smaller batteries cannot support it. Compatibility depends on the type of battery and connector your EV uses. Always check your vehicle's specifications and the charger type to ensure compatibility.
